Aston Villa's recruitment team are continuing to put in the hard yards behind the scenes this month, as the club look to make additions to their squad before the January transfer window closes in early February.

There have been a flurry of transfer stories linking the club with a variety of players already this month, with Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza understood to be a key target for the Villans.

Reports last week brought news that Villa had made progress in their attempts to lure the 21-year-old to Villa Park, with Monchi, the club's president of football operators, leading the drive to get the deal over the line.

Over the weekend, it appears that interest in Mingueza has continued to grow, with fresh reports from Spanish outlet Diario de Almeria, via Sport Witness, claiming Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig have joined the race to sign the player.

It was suggested that the apparent club's willingness to allow Mingueza to immediately return to Celta Vigo on loan until the end of the season could be an added 'tempting' bargaining chip in Leipzig's favour.

Certainly, a PS20m increase on the PS14m to trigger Mingueza's contract doesn't appear to be the most like-for-like alternative transfer deal for Villa, especially in times when PSR regulations must be strictly adhered to.

However, if a fairer price could be reached, the Villans could complete a real transfer coup in landing the highly-rated 21-year-old.

Villa's Premier League rivals Newcastle United were said to be interested in Pubill last summer, and he was close to sealing a move to Europa League champions Atalanta, only for the deal to collapse after a reported failed medical.

Which other players could Aston Villa sign this month?A host of players have been linked with a move to Villa Park this month, as the club look to bolster their squad ahead of a relentless second half of the season.

Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen looks likely to become Villa's first signing of the January transfer window, with the deal now believed to be accelerating towards completion.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Tidiam Gomis from Ligue 2 side Caen is the latest name to be linked with a move to the West Midlands, with reports suggesting the promising youngster is a top target for Villa and that talks between the two clubs are well underway.

In terms of outgoings, Villa will be hoping to boost their transfer budget with the sale of Jaden Philogene, after accepting a bid in region of PS20m from Ipswich Town.

However, the deal is not yet complete, and it remains to be seen whether the Tractor Boys are able to get it over the line.

Who are Aston Villa playing next?Aston Villa booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup last Friday, battling back to claim a 2-1 win over Graham Potter's West Ham United.

Unai Emery's side will look to progress further in the competition next month, when they play host to Tottenham in the next round.

Spurs made hard work of their third round tie, having to rely on extra time to eventually beat National League side Tamworth.

A full bill of Premier League fixtures this week will see Villa travel to take on Everton, who will be looking to ride the new manager bounce following the appointment of club icon David Moyes, who has been brought in by the club's new owners to replace Sean Dyche.

As things stand, Villa lie eighth in the Premier League table, and will be looking to close the gap on the top four, which currently stands at just four points.
