'Being seriously considered': £100k-a-week Chelsea player could get captain opportunity - journalist

Reece James is the current Chelsea captain, replacing Cesar Azpilicueta last year following the Spaniard's move to Atletico Madrid.

However, Reece James has not had too many opportunities to actually captain the Blues on the pitch because of injuries, while Enzo Maresca has questioned his leadership.

"I expected from him more in terms of leadership," Maresca said about James last week.

In the Premier League games that the right-back has not been able to play this season, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo have captained Chelsea.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea are thinking about giving Colwill a "more regular captain's role" at the club.

Discussing Chelsea's captain situation on Substack, Phillips said: "SPTC sources have heard that Levi Colwill is being seriously considered to be handed a more regular captain's role at the club, but the faith has not been lost in Reece James yet.

"Maresca has already shared that Colwill is "always speaking", showing that the defender potentially has the makings of a leader.

MORE CHELSEA STORIESEnzo Maresca should give Reece James more time Now that Maresca has let James know that he needs to develop his leadership skills a bit more, it is only fair that he gets more time to continue as captain.

The 24-year-old has responded well to his manager's criticism, putting in an excellent performance in Chelsea's 2-1 win against Newcastle United over the weekend.

His headed clearance at the end of the game may have just won Chelsea the three points.

Going forward, though, if James cannot come out of his shell, then Maresca should consider making Colwill the permanent Chelsea captain.

The central defender, who earns PS100,000 a week (via Spotrac) at Stamford Bridge, is still quite young at 21.

But he seems to be ticking the boxes for Maresca.

Colwill captained Chelsea once last season, leading his team out at Old Trafford, which is where Maresca's men will travel to for their next Premier League game.

The Blues take on Manchester United, who have just sacked Erik ten Hag.
