Bayern Munich board split on search for Thomas Tuchel replacement?
Source:Bavarianfootballworks

Bayern Munich's coaching search is taking a turn for the chaotic.

After top target Xabi Alonso decided to stick with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen for another year, the race to find a successor for Thomas Tuchel has taken many twists and turns.

And while reports from the German media may be little more than attempts at divining the tea leaves, it seems Sport1 journalist Stefan Kumberger at least has some idea of what is going on.

Via @iMiaSanMia: Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are the ones tasked with finding a new coach - however, the word of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness in the background still holds a lot of weight.

On paper, Rummenigge and Hoeness are "just" ordinary supervisory board members, but in reality they have a big say.

Rummenigge was the one who vehemently spoke out against bringing Julian Nagelsmann back and ultimately prevailed.

Having Rummenigge against him scared Nagelsmann away.

The coach feared that he would be under close observation from day 1 and also expected public reprimands from Rummenigge.

He didn't want to take that risk.

Rummenigge is an advocate for Ralf Rangnick, while Uli Hoeness would have been happy with Nagelsmann - and vice versa.

Once again the two are fighting for the best solution for the club from their perspective.

Max Eberl is considered part of the Hoeness camp.

Both have been exchanging ideas for years.

But Eberl is currently working hard to sharpen his own and independent profile.

If it is true, then the top two sporting figures at the club - Eberl and Freund - as well as the main man himself, Uli, were all on board with bringing Julian Nagelsmann back and rekindling the Bayern rejuvenation project with the exciting young coach and Bayern fan the club had let go a year ago.

And only Karl-Heinz Rummenigge's opposition got in the way.

Take it all with a grain of salt.

But it would match Uli's conciliatory tone towards Nagelsmann in a recent interview.

Now the Bavarians are being tenuously with names left and right - as illustrious as Zinedine Zidane, as questionable as Lucien Favre.

And if Bayern do indeed land Rangnick, the former Manchester United manager will be walking into a situation where three of the club's top figures wanted someone else - who was already the Plan B to another top coach in Xabi who is likely to be available next year.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel is still piloting the ship into the Champions League semifinals against Real Madrid.
