Newcastle United are prepared to be flexible with an outgoing deal for Ryan Fraser to Southampton.

The Scotland international has proved he can still offer something during his loan stint with the Saints with 13 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship and two goals. Fraser left United after being sent to train with the reserves last season after the 1-1 draw away to Bournemouth in February with Eddie Howe stating he wanted "committed" players.

Despite Newcastle's injury woes, they are still ready to make Fraser's move to Southampton a permanent deal in order to help clear the wage bill. The 29-year-old still has the remainder of this season and next term left on his contract and is believed to be on around PS60,000 per week on his United deal.

Southampton boss Russell Martin has previously said on Fraser: "We want good players and we want good characters - Ryan definitely fits into that.

"Knowing Ryan and his capabilities, would he be someone that we want as part of the project here for longer than we have him? Of course, but he has to do enough on the pitch to put himself in a position where everyone feels the same.

"Me and him are on the same page. He's on the same page as the coaching staff. Ryan will only get better."

Newcastle will now look to work with Southampton on a price as they look to boost the coffers for the next couple of windows. Fraser's current market value is around PS4million but he may be allowed to leave Newcastle for less.

Fraser has also told Southampton he is keen to stay at St Mary's beyond this season.
