Manchester City journalist Sam Lee has shared an injury update concerning Mateo Kovacic.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the midfielder would not be available for Croatia's Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Latvia and Armenia due to a muscle injury.

Now though, with City set to take on Liverpool next weekend once domestic football returns, one journalist has shared some fresh details regarding Kovacic's injury situation.

He said: "Mateo Kovacic suffered a recurrence of the thigh injury that he picked up in September during the Chelsea game last weekend. City will have a clearer idea of the diagnosis next week but it currently looks like 2-3 weeks out."

Since joining the Manchester club from Chelsea during the previous summer transfer window in a deal worth PS30m, the 29-year-old has made 14 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions.

As Lee mentioned, this thigh injury initially kept Kovacic out of action for a period earlier in the season where he missed City's Premier League matches against West Ham United and Nottingham Forest.

Since then, the midfielder has featured in five of the club's six league games, starting three of them.

Looking forward, if the Croatian is set to be on the sidelines for the next three weeks, he could be missing City's next three league games against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, as well as their next Champions League group game against RB Leipzig.

With those fixtures in mind, it's safe to say that Kovacic could be a big miss for Pep Guardiola's side given the big games that he could be unavailable for.

Moving forward, everyone at the Manchester club will be hoping that this injury issue can be dealt with permanently as soon as possible and that the midfielder will not be out for too long.
