Phil Parkinson could sign one of Wrexham's former youngsters as an alternative to Arthur Okonkwo this summer.

Wrexham's first-team squad are currently having the time of their life in Las Vegas with Andy Cannon describing the experience as 'special'.

It's the second year in a row that Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have funded a trip to the United States following promotion with attention soon turning to a gruelling season in League One.

Phil Parkinson didn't travel to Vegas and will have an eye on potential transfers. While there are little rumours to go at, it is well known that Wrexham are desperate to sign Arthur Okonkwo permanently from Arsenal.

Parkinson revealed that the club are currently working on a deal to sign the 22-year-old, but accepts it could take time.

Okonkwo enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Racecourse as he was named in the League Two Team of the Season.

As a result, the young shot-stopper has not only attracted Championship interest, but clubs abroad are also circling. This makes a deal increasingly difficult to do and the club should scour the market for potential alternatives.

Wrexham should look at former player Tom Heaton Tom Heaton started his career at Wrexham as a youngster but from an early age, many could see he was destined to go to the very top as Manchester United snapped him up as a 16-year-old in 2002.

Although he never made an appearance in United's first-team, he has gone on to have a successful career, most notably at Burnley, where he made 200 appearances for the Clarets and made his England debut in a 2-1 win over Australia in 2016.

Now back at Man United after returning to the club in 2021, the 38-year-old is on the verge of departing following four appearances, including one in the 2021/22 Champions League campaign.

Heaton sees his contract at Old Trafford expire in the summer and as he's approaching a retirement age, he's surplus to requirements.

The veteran shot-stopper, once lauded as "unbelievable" by Alan Shearer at Burnley, is ready to embark on his next challenge and Wrexham should snap him up.

The former Aston Villa keeper would add limitless amounts of experience to their backline, with his wealth of knowledge being shared with the likes of Max Cleworth.

Although Okonkwo is a young keeper equipping Wrexham for the long term, McElhenney and Reynolds have a habit of signing veterans with top-flight experience.

It would make perfect sense for them to snap up Heaton on a free transfer, as not only would it present a full circle moment - him returning to his boyhood club - but he would be arguably the third tier's best goalkeeper.

The only potential sticking point would be wages, but having persuaded James McClean and Steven Fletcher to join last year, that shouldn't be an issue for the Hollywood owners.
