Manuel Pellegrini’s City progressed through the Champions League group stage after failing on previous occasions and they have a strong squad with a lot of depth to proceed all the way. The Chilean has done a remarkable job in such short duration. Manchester City are ruthless against teams in the Premier League this season. Having drawn just two games by the end of 2013, the blue side of Manchester are already among the favourites to finish in the top 4.
City lost a few games (5) by the end of 2013 but they didn’t show any mercy to Arsenal and
Manchester United at the Etihad. Sergio Aguero is the second top scorer in the league and the new entry Alvaro Negredo has also adapted to the life in England. But, Yaya Toure has been the stand out player amongst the brilliant individual talent that the club has got. Toure is getting on the score sheet, more often than previous seasons. His game play combined with his high number of goals highlight him as the most important player in the squad.
On the other hand, City are conceding a lot of goals this season, some because of defensive frailties and some due to goalkeeping errors. City and England’s number 1, Joe Hart is not the same player as he was an year ago. But Pellegrini has brought his star man back to the starting line-up after resting him for a couple of matches.
The manager is unconcerned by the criticism of defense and in the post match interview
against Fulham, he said, “They scored one goal on the counterattack and it is normal when
you are attacking for 90 minutes that sometimes the other team can score one goal with a
counterattack. We had very bad luck on their second goal. If the other team has four, five, six chances every game then, of course, I would be concerned but that is not the reality.”
He added, “It's not easy to change the way you are playing from last year to the way we are
playing now. Maybe the other teams have more space, so we have to be very careful when we attack not to lose easy balls."
The former Malaga manager’s side scored 51 goals in the first half of the Premier League
campaign and are looking forward to break the 100-goal barrier. Pellegrini has potentially the best squad in the Premier League according to Jose Mourinho and they can clinch the title in 2014. Pellegrini’s basic challenge would be to win back the title and proceed to the later stage of Champions League after flunking on previous attempts.
